Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez — Fireside Chat at Leen's Lodge

David R. Kotok
Sun Aug 28, 2022

Readers, as promised, we have a longer video featuring Francis Suarez, Mayor of Miami. If you are intrigued by what is involved in leading a fast-growing gateway city that has become an international hub for business and finance, you will want to watch Mayor Suarez’s fireside chat from week two of Camp Kotok at Leen’s Lodge.

Mayor Suarez discusses the steps Miami has taken to respond to climate change. He tells how he aimed to protect public health and maintain the city’s economy during the pandemic. And he recounts how the city came to lead the nation in tech growth. He steers clear of political divisiveness and suggests that there’s an alternative narrative for our country, as there has been for politically diverse Miami, that focuses on strategically working for a positive future.

Miami Mayor Lightening in a Bottle

Mayor Suarez’s recipe for success for Miami involves three principles: “keep taxes low, keep people safe, and lean into innovation.” He describes Miami’s progress in each of these areas. During the Q&A, campers’ questions and the conversation ranged from Miami’s tech boom and cryptocurrency to reducing homelessness and crime and the city police department’s plan for more effectively responding to calls where a mental health issue or disability is involved.

I would like to thank Mayor Suarez for taking time out of his busy schedule to join us in Maine for fishing and some terrific conversations. You can watch the 56-minute video at this link: https://youtu.be/0X_7OvZwJ_I.
