March 30 Event Includes Panel to Help Investors

Wed Mar 1, 2017

Cumberland Advisors is pleased to announce a philanthropic gift to the six universities in the greater Sarasota area – a 12-terminal Bloomberg financial laboratory that will be housed at the University of South Florida’s Business School. All six Sarasota-Manatee “C4 Multiversity” education facilities will be able to use these terminals, as will others in the community as adult education expands the usage of the laboratory. We believe the terminal operations can run 24–7 and therefore hope that our gift results in maximum usage for the entire community.

The dedication of this philanthropic gift is set for March 30, 2017. The agenda includes a full day of discussions that will cover financial education, literacy, investments, outlooks, economics, fiduciary responsibilities, and a special section on financial issues for women. Bill Dudley, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, has agreed to keynote the day. Visit http://usfsm.edu/event/financial-literacy-day/ for details. This event is open to the public, and all interested parties are invited.

As part of the March 30 Financial Literacy Day at USF, a panel will offer insights on investment options and the outlook for investors and for financial markets. Investors, those who have oversight of investment pools, those who operate family offices, those who fall into the high-net-worth community, and those who monitor their personal investments or investments on behalf of their children, grandchildren, and others have to confront a multi-faceted decision-making structure. In order to look at the investment options and discuss them, we have engaged three experts, all widely known and recognized, with specialized expertise.

In terms of the US market, Ed Keon, managing director and portfolio manager at QMA, will discuss the outlook for the US markets. He will incorporate his personal views of those markets, their valuation, and their structure. This is the application of Bloomberg data in the decision-making process. Some of that data may be utilized by panelists like Ed, whose role includes oversight of more than $50 billion in assets.

John Mousseau, CFA, is the executive vice president & director of fixed income at Cumberland Advisors. He is an expert and seasoned veteran in taxable and tax-free bonds. He will discuss the relative values of those bonds and how they have reacted over the last year. He will add his perspective on the flow of political outcomes such as Brexit and President Trump’s victory. Lastly, he will offer his view about where the future lies in 2017.

The third panelist for this special session is Ray Dillon, former president and chief executive officer for Deltic Timber Corporation. Now retired from his role at Deltic, Ray is involved in a global initiative in timber and alternate asset classes of various types. Ray will discuss alternative investments, materials, hard assets, and how they can be evaluated and incorporated into investors’ decision-making.

The moderator of this panel is Janet Sperling, senior vice president of investments and wealth management specialist at Raymond James in Sarasota, Florida.

We expect a panel discussion like this to be of assistance to the investing public in all capacities. For the panelists and for us, the purpose here is to exchange information, not to sell a product. There are no vendors at this conference. Instead, this is a day dedicated to an information system and to the use of information by everyone in the Sarasota-Manatee community. All panelists are volunteering to participate in this function. Not one of them is selling a product to the audience, and none are receiving compensation for volunteering their efforts.

Women, men, trustees, fiduciaries, investment committees, and pension beneficiaries are welcome to learn, in addition to the academics representing the six institutions and their boards, trustees, and committees. This Financial Literacy Day and the development of the 12-terminal Bloomberg laboratory at USF are designed to open financial education and literacy to the community.

Cumberland Advisors is now entering its seventh year in Sarasota. We are an independent, fee-for-service, investment advisory firm. We serve clients in most of the 50 states and several foreign countries. We decided that this gift and an integrated Financial Literacy Day would be a way we could give back part of our success to the community that we now call home.

April is financial literacy month, nationally and in the State of Florida. On March 30th, we will help kickoff this focus on financial education.

As an endnote, we have invited Michael Chriszt, vice president and public affairs officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, to visit us during the conference to describe the Atlanta Fed’s activities in financial education. The goal is to introduce the Atlanta Fed’s financial education system to the six schools in the Sarasota area. This initiative equips students of all ages with financial knowledge and skills so that there will ultimately be fewer victims, better results for the community, more money to be distributed for philanthropic activities, and better public understanding of the economics of our nation and the world.

We hope to see you for Financial Literacy Day on March 30th at the University of South Florida. For tickets and the schedule of events, visit http://usfsm.edu/event/financial-literacy-day/.
