Dear Readers, have you wondered what it is like to be the mayor of an international gateway city in these unusual and politically fraught times? Francis Suarez, the Mayor of Miami, was my special guest at Leen’s Lodge in Maine. He agreed to a short interview with me at lunch on Long Lake near Princeton, Maine. That evening, he agreeably held a “scrum” with a detailed Q&A: included were all journalists present and the majority of the invitees. A video of that longer, on-the-record discussion is forthcoming.

Having Miami’s mayor join us for quality time at Camp Kotok was a real treat for all in attendance. We had time to visit together, to go fishing together, and to enjoy meals together and along with some of the Mayor’s colleagues. Many attendees were able to engage in substantial dialogue with him. Our camp invitees learned a lot about him and from him.
I am personally impressed by how thoughtfully and thoroughly Mayor Suarez can outline policy implications for his city and for the country. He is a skilled up-and-coming politician and a dedicated leader who is intent on upholding the constitutional values of our American governmental structure. He is fiscally conservative and favors lower taxes but is simultaneously keenly conscious of the responsibility of government in the areas of public health and climate change. It was refreshing for me to see a young Florida-based leader who has achieved national prominence while supporting such initiatives. As the mayor of a national major city, he has faced the rising sea level issue head on. And he also faced Covid policy with deep concern for his constituents while governing a major city.
I’m impressed with Mayor Francis Suarez. Here’s the short interview we did at the lakeside. In our five-minute chat, he offered an overview of what it’s like to serve the city and its future in the State of Florida. Please take five minutes to watch “Camp Kotok 2022 Week 2 - Mayor Francis X. Suarez & David R. Kotok talk about Miami, Fla & the Future” at https://youtu.be/KRKAgHzyQzE.

And please stay tuned. His longer “scrum” presentation, with an extensive Q&A, is coming.
