Fishing With Alejandra Grindal

My friend and fellow Sarasotan Alejandra Grindal, Chief Economist at Ned Davis Research, was a first-time guest at Camp Kotok this year. This was her first time fishing, too, by the way, and she did well. But that’s her fish story to tell.

Camp Kotok - Fishing With Alejandra Grindal

In this 12-minute video, Alejandra and I discuss how the ongoing pandemic, Long Covid, and the current geopolitical crisis are impacting long-term growth potential. How has the labor force been impacted, and how can we find the workers we need in fields where there are critical staff shortages? That’s a conversation that’s happening across the United States and includes one of our local Sarasota news outlets, SNN TV.

Their News Director, Craig Burdick, ran a segment that featured my three groups of potential workers impacting shortages and he included his own need for "a few good reporters."

(Note: If you watch the video segment at SNN TV's website, Craig describes me as CEO at Cumberland Advisors, which I used to be. Today, John Mousseau has taken on that role and I remain the CIO, chief investment officer.)

After Alejandra and I talked about the employment picture, we addressed other issues. What’s happening to the comparative advantage that globalization delivers? What about onshoring? Where will globalization find a way forward now that it is harder to do business with China?

In closing, Alejandra offers a key tip for anyone who is eating eel for the first time. This is something Maine campers need to know.
