Market Commentary - Cumberland Advisors – Vaccines and Variants - Part 2

For a year we have watched the toll that COVID-19 has taken on lives, economies, and much that we once took for granted. With vaccines now in hand, crisis reduction is underway. But there are assuredly potholes on the road to successfully beating back COVID-19 so that it becomes a much less disruptive threat, one […]

Market Commentary - Cumberland Advisors – Bonds Barbell Ladder Bullet - Barbell vs. Bullet

We continue to receive questions about “barbell” versus “ladder” versus “bullet” as these terms are used in bond management. Our last piece on the subject was on December 1 (“Fed’s Path; also Why Barbell, Not Ladder,” https://www.cumber.com/cumberland-advisors-market-commentary-feds-path-also-why-barbell-not-ladder/). Let’s try to answer some of the questions we’ve received with a simple case study involving a barbell […]
Who Is Unemployed
Author: Robert Eisenbeis, Ph.D., Post Date: March 9, 2021
Robert Eisenbeis

Friday’s release of the February employment report by BLS showed that the economy created 379,000 jobs in February, compared with 166,000 jobs in January. While these numbers suggest some improvement, they compare unfavorably with the fact that new claims for unemployment for the week of February 20 alone totaled 736,000. Setting aside potential problems with […]
Japan’s Steady Performance to Continue

Market Commentary - Cumberland Advisors – Japan’s Steady Performance to Continue

The Bank of Japan’s Governor Kuroda said to parliament on March 5th that there is no need to widen the band set for its long-term yield target, as the BOJ intends to maintain its policy objective to keep borrowing costs low to support the economy. This underlining of a stable monetary policy will help continue […]

Market Commentary - Cumberland Advisors – Unemployment Claims Fact, Fiction, or Fraud

The unemployment insurance payment systems that originate in the states need to be fixed. As we economists and market agents look at the national data, we must now take into account that the initial and continuing unemployment claims data has flaws that are growing. This mess requires fixing if there is to be a credible […]

Market Commentary - Cumberland Advisors – COVID Shock & The Fed

We created the chart below to depict an “underdamped oscillatory system.” Hat tip, Dr. Thomas Synnott III. We’ve included a half-century of Phillips curve data for personal consumption expenditures (PCE) vs. U-3 unemployment, color-coded by the person who was Federal Reserve chair at the time. That way you can see a year-by-year history for all […]

Market-Commentary-Cumberland-Advisors-David-Sunday-A-Texan-&-Climate-Change!

Will Rogers, the American icon from Oklahoma said: “There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.” This Sunday we’ll offer one of those from the middle category. David Schechter, the impresario of […]

Market Commentary - Cumberland Advisors – Vaccines and Variants - Part 1

Vaccines and Variants – Part 1 “Can the same vaccines protect against new COVID strains?” That is now the question of the hour, day, week, and month. We are seeing a remarkable triumph of science and medicine. In a very short time vaccines are in mass production, and they are highly effective. They are not perfect, as […]

One might actually want […]
