Covid & Long Covid Update

David R. Kotok
Fri Apr 8, 2022

Dr. Greg Kelly is a practicing pediatric epidemiology expert with frontline experience. He assembled the following instructive Covid thread on Twitter and offered it publicly to the world. In it he explores six beliefs about Covid that time and the virus have proven to be wrong. It is what we assume to be true that turns out to be false that leaves us vulnerable to ongoing harm.

Here are beliefs that people still cling to that simply aren’t so.

Not true: “It’s mostly mild.”
Not true: “Immunity is perfectly effective against severe illness & persists (one and done).”
Not true: “Long Covid isn’t real.”
Not true: “Kids are not affected.”
Not true: “I / we / my country are separate.”
Not true: “NPIs (nonpharmaceutical interventions) don't work.”

Dr. Kelly does an excellent job of explaining how these beliefs, some of which he accepted in 2020, have all been proven to be false.

I thank Dr. Kelly for his efforts. His thread is one we can share with people who may not have kept up to date with what we are learning about Covid. We note that in America we still face a political divide that injures our efforts for better public health. We are committed to providing curated and citation-sourced information to anyone who is interested. We want to blunt the impact of the insidious misinforming profiteers who are plying on innocent victims to line their own pockets. Please feel free to forward this email to anyone who may be interested.

Also, I’d like to thank those who offered kind words regarding the Long Covid Initiative, which has now produced a vitally important paper authored by Philippa Dunne, Melissa Smallwood, and Emily Taylor, on the prevalence and cost of Long Covid in the US, along with policy recommendations and implications for the labor market, employees, and employers. The full paper, “Long Covid Impact on Adult Americans: Early Indicators Estimating Prevalence and Cost,” can be found at

For a quick overview (preceding, of course, a deep dive into text, charts, and maps depicting prevalence and costs), see the press release at Yahoo Finance: “Long Covid: Nearly 7% of US adults suffering symptoms; personal financial burden estimated at $386 billion,” https://finance.yahoo.com/news/long-covid-nearly-7-u-190300358.html. The release of the paper on April 5 also coincided with a Zoom press conference moderated by Megan Greene, senior fellow at Harvard Kennedy School and global chief economist at Kroll Institute. The replay is available at this link: https://youtu.be/vrVsUGcPo6g.

Finally, please note that the Global Interdependence Center, in partnership with the Solve Long Covid Initiative, is conducting a year-long program series exploring the pandemic’s long-term healthcare, policy, and economic impacts, specifically the implications of long Covid. Part II of the series will focus on the impact of long Covid on the labor market. This free Zoom webinar will take place on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at 4:00–5:00 p.m. EDT. You can register
